5th Edition Secret Solstice Iceland, a music (96 hrs) festival in down town Reykjavik, under the midnight sun, growing every year (from 8000 people in 2014 to 15000 in 2018), an important number comparing the little population of Iceland (340.000 inhabitants)

Besides, the 10 % of the population went to Russia for the World Cup. Icelanders splashed out all their savings to support their National team

Article Iceland Secret Solstice

The famous rapper Blaz Roca has been in all the editions of the festival but this one

Why?

«Because I´ll be doing what all the decent Icelanders should do: going to Russia and support our National Team on the World cup!»

The Icelanders are used to the bad weather, from the first were dancing under the rain, but for foreigners took a whole day to realise that waiting for the sun at the cafeteria was wasting time

Article Iceland the rain was not a problem

The Icelanders are used to living with foreigners. According to the statistics, more than 2 million tourists visit the island every year. And in the Second World War, the army of the USA and UK sent 50.000 men to avoid a Nazi invasion

The most popular restaurant is a hot dog station by the old harbour

Iceland is in the middle of Europe and North America and that had a huge influence on Icelanders´s habits, such us they like big automatic cars, kids speak fluently English and they love burgers and hot dogs, but made them in Iceland. Mc Donald´s is closed from 2009 (you can see the last burger sold there in Bus Hostel like a relic) and the Icelandic hot dog (pylsa) contains meat from Icelandic lamb and pork. The old station by the harbour is very famous and even President Clinton paid a visit (among other celebrities) to it

Not long time ago, all the kids, during the summer vacation, went at least once to the ship factories to work with the fish on the high seas

Icelanders are used to the bad weather, from the first were dancing under the rain, but for foreigners took a whole day to realise that waiting for the sun at the cafeteria was wasting time. The beers´ cans (people drank them as water) were spread and smashed on the grass. Those drinks didn’t´t need refrigerator, the temperature was around 10 ºC. Welcome to the Icelandic summer!

In Iceland the enemy is not the snow nor the snow or rain, it´s the win that sometimes goes over 100 km/h and flies off the barbecues on the balconies

I asked Daði Freyr Guðjónsson, dancer of the TV show Allir að vera dansa (everyone goes to dance) which was the best band in the festival and he said: I would say Gentleman´s Dub Club gave us the best live performance I have never seen  –his friends nod unanimously-, we almost forgot that we have to buy new shoes tomorrow -he says laughing and looking sadly at the mud puddles

The venue of the Secret Solstice is in the area of Laugardalur. However, the wind spreads the music for all the city. Some neighbours complained, but you can´t please everyone. In Iceland the enemy is not the snow nor the the rain, it´s the win that sometimes goes over 100 km/h and flies off the barbecues on the balconies. Anyway, the seagulls went on flying around the fog, but it was not fog, it was the fumes of the food stations

Einar Stefánsson, the drummer of Vök and Hatari, says that Björk lives in Iceland because Icelanders respect her privicy

From the 21th to the 24th June, the 6 stages of Secret Solstice, each one had the name of a Nordic God (Valhalla, Gimli, Askur, Fenrir, Ragnarok and Hel), were part of a small town (instead of ramparts had fences) where people slept (camp site area), relaxed in the swimming pool nearby (Arnór Dan, singer of Agent Fresco says pools are better and cheaper than The Blue Lagoon), bought (even there was a shop for phones and gadgets), ate (the price of a burger was 1850 ISK, 15€), drank, got a tattoo (I don´t recommend it under the effect of several beers), danced, saw the artists very close…

Interview to VÖK

The Icelanders are shy by nature and don´t usually stand on front of the stage. Einar Stefánsson, the drummer of Vök and Hatari, says that Björk lives in Iceland because Icelanders respect her privacy. For example, the President of Iceland doesn´t have any bodyguard and you can see him in IKEA buying a liner

Another anecdote, on the Vestmannaeyjar´s football tournament for kids (read the article) Guðni Jóhannesson, the President of Iceland, was in one of the outside hot pots of the public swimming pool, he was alone with Lilja Alfreðsdóttir (Minister of Education), but I was pretty sure it was a spontaneous casual meeting; however, no one dared to go and interrupt them, except for a couple of tourists that of course didn´t have any idea of whom they were and all the Icelanders burst into laughter

The high quality of the bands in Secret Solstice

One thing on common of all the editions of Secret Solstice is the high quality of the bands. Daði Freyr Guðjónsson says: «We had last year the Foo Fighters and Prodigy, and  this Slayer (final tour), Stormy, Death From Above 1979, Bonnie Tyler, Jet Black Joe, Gus Gus, Steve Aoki, HAM, John Acquaviva, Agent Fresco…»

By the way, one of the best things about these kind of music festivals is to discover new bands. Icelandic artists are quite accessible and they frequently interact with the audience. Arnór Dan, leader of Agent Fresco, went down from stage, jumped out the containment fence (in the eyes of disbelief of the bouncers), and started taking selfies with his fans. Rakel Mjöll, intrepid singer of Dream Wife, approached so much the audience than she fell down from the stage to the floor. Luckily she was not seriously hurt

Nevertheless, there are always some last minute cancellations. For instance, Ólafur Þór, a tall young boy with curly hair was very disappointed because he bought the ticket only to see the rapper J HUS (UK), but he was arrested at the airport for having a gun and couldn´t make it

The ones who drank a lot and turned on the automatic refill of their chips probably had the worst hangover on their lives, the Icelandic Króna is very high (price of one beer 1000 ISK= 8 €)

It´s a matter of fact that Icelanders don´t use cash any more, you can buy even a candy bar with the credit card and no one is going to wail for that. However, in this occasion, credit cards were not accepted to buy any more, the customers had to use a bracelet with a chip they recharged with the App of the festival. So the ones who drank a lot and turned on the automatic refill of their chips probably had the worst hangover on their lives, the Icelandic Króna is very high (price of one beer 1000 ISK= 8€)

The city is like a circus: see and to be seen

In the morning the Hallgrímskirkja church,  Harpa (the futuristic Music Hall), the pond by the City Hall, Faxaflói bay, the restaurants in Hlemur… were full of people from 32 different countries, you saw they were from Secret Solstice Festival because their green and violet hair, piercings, make up, tattoos, punk-hippy-rapper style, fur coats combined with skirts, football long sockets and white sneakers… a circus similar I used to see in Sonar Barcelona

Secret Solstice planned concerts under the glacier (Langjökull) and inside the lava cave Raufarhólshellir

Reykjavik is a very cosmopolitan city with many attractions; nevertheless, to be in Iceland and not going outside to see the dramatic landscapes and nature is almost a sin

For this reason, Secret Solstice planned concerts under the glacier Langjökull (120 tickets price 34.900 ISK) and inside the biggest lava cave Raufarhólshellir (only 50 tickets price 25.900 ISK)

«I didn´t know it was possible to set up a discotheque inside the glacier with alcoholic drinks. Dubfire (the DJ) was outstanding», one excited Canadian girl told me

Traditions in Iceland

Though it doesn´t seem like that, Iceland still depends a lot on the countryside economy (fishing and farming) and just a few miles from the city you find many animals (such as horses (they are unique, they have 5 steps instead of 3, and the ones that go abroad can not come back any more in order of preserving the breed)  cows or sheep) on the road (if you run over one, you have to call the police to identify the owner and pay for it), villages of less than 50 inhabitants (all they have a church with a cemetery on the side)… Not long time ago, it was almost compulsory  for teenagers to go in summer (on their school vacation)  to work open sea in a fish factory ship

Carpe Diem. The music festival passes by as fast as the summer in Iceland

It´s a kind of privilege to enjoy the concerts outdoors in an area that is totally covered by snow and ice in winter. Skaði, burlesque artist, says in her performance that the motto of the festival is Carpe Diem. The 96 hours of music pass as fast as the summer  in Iceland (sometimes it doesn´t show up at all). There is a bit of darkness, only from 12 AM to 2 AM, and to lower the curtains is necessary  (they are not frequent in Iceland) to sleep a bit

The crazy weather in Iceland

When the good weather pays a visit to Iceland, everyone stops whatever is doing and goes downtown and have some beers at the outside tables of the bars facing Austurvöllur Square (even if it´s Monday and they have to work next day), shops put a board on the door saying: «closed for good weather», the whole city smells of BBQ and  there is a long line on the Government store to buy alcoholic drinks

Javi Valiño, dancer, deejay and Spanish entrepreneur (Audiovisuales Gs Prods Media Group) has been living in Iceland for 6 years and performed twice in Secret Solstice with the hip hop band Þriðja Hæðin, for him, the most shocking of the midnight sun is to enjoy 20 non stop  hours of daylight

¿What is different from other music festivals in Iceland?

Blaz Roca (Erpur Eyvindarson), rap´s father Iceland (the successful new rappers (Jói Pé og Krói, Ulfur Ulfur, Aron Kan…) are around 18 years old) is an uncommon Icelander, he smokes Cuba cigars at home and has a bar full of bottles of rum with a big picture of Maradona on the top. He had a TV show where he made fun of his guests

«There are only 4 important music festivals in Iceland and Secret Solstice has the best of everyone: quality of the bands of Airwaves, electronic music of Sonar and the let´s get drunk and get some music as well of Þjóhátið (party outdoors on crazy weekend of beginning August)»

Icelandic women admit they also go hunting and get drunk

It sounds a bit strange coming from so a civilise country as Iceland; however, they have a poor culture of alcohol: either they don´t drink a drop alcohol (BAC is almost 0) or they get drunk until they pass out. Beer was forbidden till 1989 and Icelanders used to get drunk at the airport and the plane when going on holiday

I asked one Icelandic girl, tall and blond, she works as a bartender in one of the mos famous cocktail bars in Reykjavik, what band she is going to see next and her answer was:

«Just ask my friends, man. I came here to get drunk»

In a party, you can talk to everyone even the president, what is more complicated is they remember that conversation next day

A friend of mine who has lived in Iceland for many years told me that, in a party, you can talk to everyone even the president, what is more complicated is they remember that conversation next day

Iceland had the first woman First Minister (Vigdís Finnbogadóttir), the first lesbian First Minister (Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir) and the current First Minister is a woman as well, Katrín Jakobsdóttir

The women´s bands succeeded in Secret Solstice: Vicky (read the interview), Ása, Una Stef, Skaði, GDRN, Dream Wife… (Rakel Mjöll, the singer, has a provocative style like Joy Division and has a great future as Björk). To summarise: Girls have also the right to get drunk and have fun in the concerts

Interview to HAM: I don´t think the average of Icelanders have a good taste for music

When I asked Sigurjón, singer and guitarist of  HAM (read the interview) and screenwriter of the famous serial Trapped, why Iceland always fails in Eurovision, he said that the people who make and choose the songs, are very fine doctors and dentists from Gardabær (the most posh neighbourhood in Reykjavik), but they don´t have any idea of music

Reportaje Islandia actuación grupo HAM

Here no one will criticise you for leaving a good job and look for something new or more exciting when you are over forty

The other singer and guitarist, Börn Blondal, he is the current Chairman of the Chief Executive Board of Reykjavik City Council (Óttar Proppé, the former Health Minister, is in the band as well), said: «as we are few Icelanders, we have to work more and to take more jobs per person. If you choose a certain path, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to stay in it for the whole life, you can change directions or take detours. We have the freedom of changing opinions because how few we are. People are used to it. Here no one will criticise you for leaving a good job and look for something new or more exciting even you are over forty«

I would add that the cost of living is so high that a lot of people have to take different jobs to survive

«In the 80´s Iceland started to open to the world and we were seeing more cultures of another nations, people were going abroad more, so the world became bigger, so I would say that the period was a melting pot, not only for the artists,  we kind of believed that everything is possible» Sjón, friend and composer of Böjrk said basically the same (read the interview)

Sigurjón says he wouldn´t be shocked at all if Katrín Jakobsdóttir might, in the future, took a little different turn and write crime novels

The Icelanders don´t see as many barriers to reach their dreams as the Spaniards

Öttar Fjordnordur, Icelandic writer who lives in Barcelona, agrees about the freedom the Icelanders have to choose their lives: «We don´t see so many problems as the Spaniards do, if we want something, at least we try»

The most of Icelandic bands don´t make a living from music

Icelandic market is very small. Arnór Dan, Agent Fresco´s leader, said: «except for a lucky few, making a living from music in Iceland is very difficult (the most of us have another job) because the scale of population. For example, in Agent Fresco, we have been working hard for 10 tears, doing great tours, having so much fun,  but still not near to be able to live about it at all, you know; people are in the music for their passion, that´s may be the key reason to why some of the Icelandic music sounds so unique, we don´t do it for the money»

Conclusion

My conclusion is surprising: Iceland has a reputation for high standard of living, but on the other hand, Icelanders have to work a lot and hold different jobs

Interview Agent Fresco

Hálldór Már (read the interview), the Icelandic guitarist who speaks fluently Catalan and has a TV show in Catalonia, started playing in pubs and said that earning money from music is very hard everywhere (the bars pay a pittance)

The loudest band in Iceland

Another advantage of the concerts outdoors is the waves expand freely on the sky and the noisy bands can press the gas limitless. The Pink Street Boys got the aware to the loudest band in Iceland. I didn´t know it, but when I was on the first line with no earplugs I almost died

Unfounded rumours about Iceland

I am still amazed by the unfounded rumours on the Net

One colleague from South America asked me in the press room if it was true the Icelandic Government paid a grant to all the foreigners who married an Icelandic girl. Of course I said it´s not true

Young rappers of Iceland

We listened to different kind of music during several days, but the rappers had a great success, especially the Icelandic, most of them are not over 18 years old. I interviewed:

  • Jói Pé og Króli: Iceland is a big family, the first one is the nephew of the President and the second made a song from the mistake that one of the most famous musicians in Iceland, Bubi Morthens, made on the radio (He said bomba in Spanish, but spelled B-O-B-A, without M)

Hólmfríður Matthíasdóttir, but everyone calls her by her nickname, Úa, she is the director of the biggest publisher in Iceland, Forlagið

Interview Hólmfrídur Matthíasdóttir Forlagid publisher

I interviewed Úa in her office facing the lovely Ránargata street in Reykjavik. Nói, the famous grey cat of the company slept on her desk and was moving his tale when I walked in. The room was bright, full of books and plants, I felt the good atmosphere

Biography

«I have always been fascinated by books, this is so much a part of my life

My family was very interested in literature. My mother (Ingibjorg Jónsdottir) was a writer, my sister (Magnea Matthíasdóttir) is a writer and translator as well

I learnt to read when i was 4 years old

I had decided long time ago after finishing my studies in Highschool to go abroad»

Interview Hólmfrídur Matthíasdóttir Forlagid publisher and the cat Nói
Interview Hólmfrídur Matthíasdóttir Forlagid publisher and Nói the cat

Barcelona

«At that time, It was popular among Icelanders to go to Paris, London or Berlin, but my Icelandic boyfriend and I wanted to be more original and went to Barcelona (I was in love with that city since I visited it for my first time when I was 14 years old)

The plan was to study Spanish, but after one year, I decided to stay on and to study Spanish Literature (it was the perfect combination because I was able to do two things I like plus living in Barcelona and learning Catalan as well. It was a wonderful situation!

Interview Hólmfrídur Matthíasdóttir Forlagid publisher

A halfway of the studying I met my Spanish husband so I stayed on, but after our daughters were born, I needed to find a job. I went back to Iceland and worked for the Reykjavik Arts Festival. However, it didn’t work out, my husband didn’t want to live in Iceland so I had to go back to Barcelona and find a job there. I was lucky because I got a job in the publishing industry, I started in a small publisher called Oasis, more well known for the magazine they published, Integral, and later on RBA. So I was getting paid for reading books!, it can´t be anything better in the world!»

Homesick for Iceland

«Even though I met nice people and felt well in Barcelona, I was always homesick for Iceland. It was not enough for me to go 3 weeks in the summer

So when I had the offer to work in Forlagið, I reached an agreement with my husband: I would go to Iceland and he would come afterwards, but he didn’t come. It was 2006, and even we didn’t realise it, crisis was coming, sales were going down in Spain and things were being more difficult. So I was able to reach another agreement with my publishing house to work part of the year in Barcelona and part of the year in Reykjavik»

Irresistible offer

«Two years ago I was offer the chance to take on the position of the director of Forlagið (the former one retired) and you can´t say not to that kind of offer, so now I´m sharing my life between Barcelona and Reykjavik»

How do you manage to do it?

«In the past, when I was the rights director of Forlagið, it was much easier because my job was to be in contact to foreign publishers and they never saw me except for when we went to the book fairs. I am used to not being at the office all the time. I already had my routine, so I tried to work from Barcelona with an Spanish timetable, the same hours of people living here (adapting to the time difference), and I was always available for the company whenever they needed me, so it worked out

However, currently I only go one week every month to Barcelona and for my holidays as well. I have access on my computer to all the files of the company and I can connect to them wherever I am. It´s just a question of planning my meetings, use a bit more Skype, the phone… In Iceland we are used to that, but sometimes it´s very hard»

Would be that possible in a Spanish company?

«I think it´s a just a question of mentality. The mentality in Iceland is more flexible to work. But anyway, I don´t think it would have worked in Spain»

Other issues about mentality?

«The society in Spain (as in many countries) is bigger. For example, in Iceland when I was growing up, no one locked the door at night and you left your bag in any place and when you came back still was there. It´s a different kind of society, it´s not better or worse

Iceland is smaller and more familiar. When I came back to work in Iceland, all the employees still had a key of the work place in case they want to come at work on the weekend and the necessary Internet connections to work from home»

What is your job as a director in Forlagið

«I´m responsible for all the publications of the program. We publish around 180-200 books every year, both translations and Icelandic books; my job is to organise all of that. Of course I have a good team here that helps me a lot»

Interview Hólmfrídur Matthíasdóttir Forlagid publisher and writer Jordi Pujolá

Relationship with writers

How do you deal with the authors?

«It´s not difficult to work with my writers, all of them are wonderful

The publishing industry is a very special industry, in the sense that it´s based on trust. You have to have a good relationship with your authors and the authors with the editors who work on their manuscripts»

What is your secret?

«I always keep my word and I don´t make promises I will not be able to full fill up later on»

One of your authors is Arnaldur Indriðason. How is he?

«He is the best seller in Iceland of all times, over the Nobel Prize Halldór Laxness

He is very famous and very charming»

What do you miss from Iceland when you are in Spain?

«The light, the mountains, the Icelandic air. Iceland charges my batteries»

What do you miss from Spain when you are in Iceland?

«My family, my home in Barcelona (she lives in El Born, the trendiest neighbourhood), the food, my life in Barcelona (going out, going to the market, have the vermouth…), I love Barcelona!»

10 tips to go yo Barcelona

You are lucky you can live in 2 places

«Yes, but I have two lives»

What is your experience of being a woman in Spain and Iceland?

«In my opinion, being a woman and a foreigner is harder in Spain, also to reach a post of this level

I think equality is better in Iceland, but still are many things to be done»

For example

«Parents in Iceland share the 9 month maternity 3-3 and the other 3 either one of them. However, what seems to be happening is that the more people are earning, the less are taking the time off; so as father´s wages are higher, mothers are taking the days off instead of them so they family loses less money. That is a sad thing, fathers should have the same right to be with their child»

Do you think men have more self confidence than women?

«I think men and women have the same abilities, some times people doubted themselves, they don´t think they have the talent or the capacity they actually have, but it happens both in men and women

Nevertheless, some people trust the man rather than the woman; for instance, if a man and a woman come in, immediately they think the man is in charge when in fact it is the woman. That is a cultural issue built into the structure of the society that takes over when you are not thinking about it. It´s very hard to fight this»

What are your favourite authors?

«I started reading Eduardo Mendoza, Vázquez Montalban, García Marquez, Vargas Llosa, Isabel Allende…»

And Icelandic?

«I like all my Forlagið´authors»

Tell me about the tradition of giving books in Christmas

«We call it the Christmas book flood and it´s very special in Iceland

To give books as Christmas presents is part of the Icelandic tradition, so it has evolved in such  way that most of the local authors are published in the months before Christmas, from September to November

People here like preparing Christmas and the weeks going before they are involved in many Christmas´ projects such us baking cookies, knitting or decorating houses

It´s dark, cold the weather sometimes is nasty, but inside, the houses are warm and comfortable and you have candle lights…

Interview Hólmfrídur Matthíasdóttir Forlagid publisher

A part of this tradition is this Christmas book flood: the authors have presentations, readings… and people have coffee and discuss the books they are going to buy as a Christmas presents, so every one gets a book and enjoys his holiday reading on this cosy atmosphere. I think it´s lovely»

Characteristics about Icelandic rappers is youth and talent

Icelandic rap music: JóiPé og Króli

The members of JóiPé og Króli are just only 18 years old, but their songs are on the top of Spotify (please check!). Besides that, they do all the job: writing, performance and production (they are great artists not like Milli Vanilli!)

Both adults and teenagers (also children) love JóiPé og Króli

Why? Because they dare to joke about almost everything (the unforgettable mistake of the famous singer Bubbi Morthens spelling BOMBA as B-O-B-A or the taste of President of Iceland, Guðni Th. Jóhannesson, for pizza with no pineapple) and they are on the same vibe of the new generation

About Blaz Roca, the rap father in Islandia

When talking to Blaz Roca he was going to Russia to support the National Team and told me to interview JóiPé og Króli and did so I. He told me they and GKR are the best and I agree.

Read the interview to Blaz Roca, he says the rap nowadays is, in general, less technical and more simple

However, JóiPé og Króli don´t totally agree with that opinion and said the production is very important and remarkable in current rap

They went to the typical touristic spots in Spain (Salou in Tarragona), but  they are also fans of Barça and Barcelona (by the way Króli is now in my city, enjoy it!). They like of course the food and excellent weather and the good vibe of the country

JóiPé og Króli are nice and polite guys, they are very famous but still have the feet on the ground. In general, young people in Iceland are more mature and independent than in other countries. I think it´s because they grow up in a free environment and the society doesn´t see so many barriers to achieve their dreams

I met Eygló Scheving (singer) and Ástrós (bass) from Vicky rock band Iceland  on the opening of the festival 21st. June 2018

Vicky is an Icelandic melodic rock band (they can be hard as well). The members are 3 girls from Hafnarfjörður and one guy (the drummer). The band VÖK is also from this neighbourhood (read the article)

A successful rock band of girls is not a surprise in Iceland, a country  that was the first of having a President woman of the nation, a lesbian First Minister and a current First Minister. Sigurjón Kjartansson, singer of HAM, said Katrín Jakobsdóttir might become a writer of crime novels in the future (read the interview)

Vicky band Iceland a funny start

The origin of the Icelandic band Vicky: four girls met to watch their favourite TV serial Vicky Pollard. After drinking some beers and glasses of wine, they decided to form a band music. Ástrós chose the bass and started classes next day because had no idea how to play it

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxCPj40eFNc

In 2008, the English media were very curious in that Vicky Pollard band because it´s a British serial, so they cut down the name and became just Vicky (the girls wanted to be on the spotlight, but just for their music)

Las costumbres de los islandeses (pulsa)

The music band  Vicky got very important reviews, for example from the prestigious magazine Rolling Stone, and they did tours in America, Asia and Europe. Besides Secret Solstice, they have played in Iceland Airwaves as well

She lived in Brazil and speaks Portuguese. She likes listening to all kind of music

Ástrós has long dark hair, blue eyes and wears a cool leather black jacket. He says openly she is not interested in Hip Hop music (the mainstream in Iceland, read the article of Agent Fresco) and recommends the Icelandic movie Metalhead (video below)

What do you like from Spain?

They like of course the food and weather. Ástrós is going to Barcelona at the end of August, but she is not going to the beach, there are some more important things to do. If you see her, just stop her and asked for an autograph, she is very nice

All the turism is in the south of Iceland and Golden Circle. We need to spread it to the whole country

Right now the mainstream of Icelandic music, as Arnór Dan (link the interview) leader of Agent Fresco band says, is the hip hop. Rap in Iceland is the king

Interview Ulfur Ulfur Iceland the wolves of rap surprise

Ulfur Ulfur Iceland Rap Secret Solstice

I saw the shows and interviewed many bands in Secret Solstice (Aron Can, Jói Pé, Úlfur Úlfur…) all of them different, but with one thing on common: quality

One of the advantages of going to a festival such us Secret Solstice is you have the chance of discovering some new bands, Ulfur Ulfur was a pleasant surprise

Ulfur Ulfur rap Iceland raining Secret Solstice
Ulfur Ulfur rap Iceland dancing under the rain

The audience stayed until the last minute despite the rain and bad weather. One girl told me Arnar is the most handsome boy in Iceland

Ulfur Ulfur (Wolfs Wolfs) is an activist band famous for questioning anything, these two guys have nothing to do with drugs, money and eccentric women; their lyrics describe real social problems

Members Ulfur Ulfur Iceland

  • Helgi Sæmundur Guðmundsson (28th February 1988) he raps and sings, but is responsible for all the production. Helgi is the brain of the wolf

  • Arnar Freyr Frostason (29th February 1988) he is one of the fastest and technically talented rappers in the Icelandic scene. He is the mouth of the wolf and able to cheer up the dead from the grave. Arnar is on the verge of releasing a solo album and his fiancee is Salka Sól Eyfeld, singer of Amabadama and Reykjavikurdætur (Reykjavik daughters) (see video below), also in the Secret Solstice 2018 program

The new generation of rappers in Iceland are amazing talented (and young). So young that they only have memories from Spain when they were 14 years old and went to the typical touristic spots with their parents

Helgi, well built and quit, says:

I went once to Barcelona with my parents. I remember the temperature was 40 ºC and we walked for the whole day and I was burning off

Arnar, slim, hair in ponytail:

I went to Albir with my fiancée, the typical tourist spot. Fortunately we rented a car and went to Valencia, it turned out to be the greatest stay, nice city, not the usual beach shit and fast food

The videos of Úlfur Úlfur are funny, ironic and describe the Icelandic folklore with some nostalgia: people in the countryside, old cars and fast food and candy. I asked if he had paella?

Yes, of course. I am not a huge fan, but it was good enough

I asked also for their favourite places in Iceland

Arnar:

I recommend spending 3 or 4 days in Reykjavik (my favourite place is Kex Hostel because it has bar, restaurant, good atmosphere, live music…) and afterwards to rent a car and head to the north or the West Fjords

I see you guys love cars and races, do you speed in Iceland?

(laughs)

Arnar:

Nei, just driving at the speed limit, 90 km/h

Helgi:

I recommend the north, (they are from Sauðarkrókur, a city of 2500 inhabitants). It´s a beautiful and unspoiled land. We need more tourists in the north

Are you sure do we need more tourists?

(laughs again)

Anar:

Yest, but all the traffic is in the south and Golden Circle. We need to spread the tourism in the whole country

Yes, indeed, that is a very good point

I was also interviewing the famous rapper in Iceland Blaz Roca and asked them about him

Both at the same time

We love it, Blaz Roca is our father

Pink Street Boys Iceland

Icelandic band from Kopavogur (Reykjavik) neighbours of Blaz Roca (read interview), they formed in 2013

Pink Street Boys refers to the street where the band rehearses, an industrial area surrounded by tall ugly buildings and fast food restaurants

First they met only to drink beers and play some music as well, nowadays they are a successful band and won several prizes, among them the one for the loudest band in Iceland (it´s true, I went without my earplugs, stayed on the first line for the whole concert and I almost died, but pleasantly). They are noisy and look wild on stage, but they are honest and nice guys  in real life

Pink Street Boys Iceland

I compare them with The Ramones, please check the videos and Spotify songs. You will come a fan as me

It was a nice surprise on Friday the 22nd June (Secret Solstice 2018). I didn´t know anything about them, but some other bands I was interviewing to (for example Vicky) told me dont´t miss them!

They play hell garage rock. I really like their shoegazers outlook. Read the interview with the Icelandic guitarist Halldór Már

Even though their outlook is very cool (a mix of cowboys Texas and angel´s hell), they don´t care about fashion, they just come to the stage and shot the audience. In the beginning, people stared at them  a bit shocked, but later, with some beers, started nodding their heads (me too)

  • Axel Björnsson singer and guitar, he has that outstanding bear from he was 12 years old (ha ha), he loves baseball cups and cowboy hats (Don´t mess with Texas). As Arnór Dan from Agent Fresco (read the interview) told me, the most of the artists in Iceland don´t make a life from music, and Axel is a painter. When he got down from the stage, sweating and looking like a wild bear, I felt a bit shy of stopping him for the interview (I am a writer, I have no experience as a journalist), but he just smiled and accepted, the same with the other members (takk krakkar). I asked him about Spain and told me he loves the food, the good weather and chip price for beers (I agree, very important point)

  • Alfred Óskarsson (black hood) sings and plays percussions (awesome with tambourine), he is tall, slim, with long hair, sun glasses and wears Iron Maiden T-shirts. Despite his fiery look, he´s also very nice and courteous guy. You see, they go down from the stage and are normal guys again. Alfred studied art, likes English football (Tottenham) and loves Spanish culture

The drummer went to jail in Thailand

  • Einar Björn Þórarinsson drummer, he actually doesn´t look like the typical Icelandic guy, he has dark skin and black hair, he likes NBA T-shirts (Bulls). The anecdote was he was able to hear some friends calling him (and waving) from the audience in the middle of a super noisy song, so he replied with a wave and smiled as well. He was also in a prison in Thailand. He was very original talking about Spain and remarked the Gaudi architecture. The first one no talking about food or weather, he has all my respect

This interview was done after the concert of Agent Fresco Secret Solstice Iceland 2018

Interview Agent Fresco Iceland

Agent Fresco is an Icelandic band that combines pop, alternative, rock and metal, formed in 2008, just weeks prior to win the competition Músíktilraunir. They sing in English and their show is outstanding

Lyrics are very poetic, almost epic, the name of the last album is Destrier

They remind me a bit the Smashing Pumpkins, but it´s just a personal opinion

Some questions to the singer and composer of Agent Fresco band, Arnór Dan

He is tall, handsome and very sensitive, but still with the feet on the ground. In the last interview to HAM (check here), I remarked the contrast of Sigurjón and Óttar´s voices, but in Agent Fresco, Arnór Dan is able to sing as both, from acute to deep voice, in seconds

Great show Agent Fresco

The band got mad playing Black water. Arnór Dan had the cable of the micro rolled like a snake in his arm, the hair of Hrafnkell Örn (drummer) almost touched the roof, the guitars were on fire… at the end, Arnór jumped from the stage to the fence in the middle and then joined the audience (shocked security guards couldn´t stop him)

Why Icelanders are more open to changes?

It looks like Icelanders are more open to changes and reach their dreams more easily. What is your opinion?

There are many factors that impact and inspire the human beings such us the surroundings, the environment, the crazy funny weather… (from the constant light and energy  in summer to the darkest time in winter), so people are ready to make big changes that are not normal for others, changes that affect decisions, work, relationships, music, creations…

Passion or money?

Why a country so little has so great bands?

Definitely It´s not for the money, it´s for the passion. Except for a lucky few, making a living from music in Iceland is very difficult (the most of us have another job) because the scale of population. For example, in Agent Fresco, we have been working hard for 10 tears, doing great tours, having so much fun,  but still not near to be able to live about it at all, you know; people are in the music for their passion, that´s may be the key reason to why some of the Icelandic music sounds so unique, we don´t do it for the money

Interview Agent Fresco slfies with the audience

Happy on stage

I saw you were happy on stage and you told it repeatedly to the audience

I was so happy on stage because it was our  first show in Iceland since September last year; man, we missed a lot the tours. For me, to not performing for so long  and not having release anything since last year and still getting a lot of people at the time of the show so early on (it doesn’t sound it´s early at 6 PM but its still early for a lot of Icelanders) it´s great. When we left, while Slayer was playing, there were still people coming in, it was the last main concert, this mentality of going out late is so ridiculous some times

Young people in Secret Solstice

I like these festivals because you get the chance to play for some people you  have never seen before, we have been playing for so many years that it´s good to see young people being interested in us as well

Interview Agent Fresco Secret Solstice highlights
Interview Agent Fresco Arnór Dan coming back

What do you think of Þjótahátið festival, let´s get drunk and get some music as well?

  • I love all the festivals, I love Secret Solstice for the timing (summer), down town location and variety of bands and audience
  • I´m raised in Denmark so I am not part of the tradition of  Þjótahátið, I respect it but I don´t really agree with people who like getting totally drunk, I prefer the music
  • Airwaves is really strong show case festival for so many artists, Agent Fresco will be playing this year
  • Sonar, we would like to be invited in Barcelona

But of course all of the festivals have their strengths and weaknesses

Interview Agent Fresco great show Secret Solstice 2018
Interview Agent Fresco in Secret Solstice 2018

Variety of music in Icelandic festivals

We like being invited to every single festival in Iceland, they are open, not focus on only one sound range, otherwise that would kill the vibe of all the bands. You can be the best trash metal band and then have 4 other metal trash bands and then your sound becomes inevitably monotonous, dull for the ear

The meaning of the name Agent Fresco

Let´s letting people guest and try to figure out themselves

Well, its not deep philosophy, may be it came philosophy by the years; my grandpa say one thing at one time that was very cool: the fresco for the painting and agent is a person selected to represent you: you are the painters of your music, thoughts, ideas, passion that always changes at the canvas

But hopefully the most important is just the music, music shapes the meaning, music is all

Inspiration in Iceland living in Denmark

Sadly I am out of touch when happened many things here in Iceland, I was like a tourist when I moved in 2006, but still I was very interested in Icelandic bands

They inspired me very much. In a Sigur Rós´ concert  in Denmark, I was almost crying because  they were something so unreal, beautiful and the sound was so magical…

Interview Agent Fresco show SS18
Interview Agent Fresco show and interview Arnór Dan

Agent Fresco Iceland

Then in 2008 we started with Agent Fresco and we are now proud of being part of the musicians I always admired

Good prospects, high expectations

The band combines hard working and talent so their international success is a matter of fact

We are writing the new album, it´s taking 2 years  now and we´ll be recording after the EU tour in September. We put pressure in ourselves but it´s not because we want people to love what we are doing, to sell records or to get a hit single. It´s because we want to do what excites us and if we don’t feel like the fun, then we start over

As a writer,I love this long process of writing. Lyrics are the foundations of songs

We are really looking forward to finish the new album and do some more tours. I hope everything will be all right; but man, if it doesn’t happen, totally cool. We are enjoying the ride, we love being on stage together, only that is fucking great for all of us

Interview Arnór Dan by www.escritorislandia.com
Interview Arnór Dan by Jordi Pujolá

So far so good

You get older, you get wiser, you prioritise differently, you want to do good for your self but do good for others and have fun when doing it and try to enjoy every moment of that, and whatever happens with the album, we´ll be happy, so far so good

Agent Fresco in Spain

We have been 3 times in Barcelona venues but only in one festival  called Be prog! (2016) That opened up a lot of doors, we need badly more of those shows and the contact with our international fans. We also have been to Sevilla and Madrid

I like the weather, the food, the people…

The problem Spain Catalonia

I love people in Spain because they are very passionate, really loud…; but in Barcelona, I tried to be cautious when talking on stage, because I didn’t want to make a mess of the problem regarding Spain and Catalonia. I respect that and I hope they soon find  a solution

Humility of Icelandic bands

Icelandic scene is different and bands are much more humble than in other countries. When Leana (my photographer) and I finished the interview to HAM at he backstage, we saw the guys of Agent Fresco on the next table and wished them luck for the show. Although they are super cool and have won many competitions, they looked look like just four normal guys

I was very shocked when I asked Arnór Dan if they were interested in playing in Sonar Barcelona (my city) and he replied:

It´s something we would love it, but I don’t think they are going to invite us

Of course they´ll do and it´s going to be a fucking success

Did you study music?

Your voice is very dynamic: bright, dramatic, it can change in seconds from the calm to the storm. Did you take classes?

Yes, some. Nevertheless, I think I ruined them. Very professional teachers, very talented vocalists… but I mostly learnt from listening to many kind of music (hardcore, noisecore, pop, metal…) and different emotions that people are trying to express with their voices, and training alone (writing music, screaming, trying to push my voice here or there) or with my friends

Singing alone helped me to open. As an artist, I really needed to express my self and singing was my way. Its natural to me to reflect any atmosphere with the  voice

Intervie Agent Fresco in Secret Solstice pict Leana Clothier
Agent Fresco interview in Secret Solstice by Jordi Pujolà

However, If I were in a band that plays the same kind of music in every song, I wouldn´t be so varied with my voice. I am lucky I sing with these guys and we perform together

Music has always been in my mind so I had much fun in the process

What is your favourite music?

All kind, but specially I love pop

I was inspired by a lot from bands such as: Mínus, Sigur Rós, MUM, Mugison, Converge, Black Brothers…

Contact with the audience

I saw you interacted a lot with the audience and they were very grateful

Of course, the audience wants to take the advantage of touching the artists and unfortunately that is missing a lot; there are many artists they forget to do it

I don´t necessarily want a performance to be 100% spotted on, pitched perfect, every thing the same, people standing still… I want to see passion, I want to  see performance, I want to see connection with the audience and feed back… and if you don’t see that, what is the fucking point of having a life show?

Your favourite place in Iceland

There are hidden spots anywhere out of Reykjavik. I suggest to do a road trip with friends listening to music

And I strongly recommend going to the thermal baths (public swimming pools) all the year around, they have hot pots outside, steaming room… They are much cheaper than the Blue Lagoon (tourist trap) and you have the chance of meeting local people. It´s a nice and relaxing way of starting the day. So bring your swimming clothes and don´t be shy. Yes, Icelandic people can be shy as well, but just in the beginning, later on they open up like a flower

Interview HAM Iceland

Interview HAM Iceland

In collaboration with Secret Solstice, the interview was made after the sound check at the venue, with the support of Icelandic Mountain Guides and Iceland Rovers

Pictures by Leana Clothier

Interview HAM Iceland band in Secret Solstice with writer Jordi Pujola
Interview HAM Iceland band in SecretSolstice Jordi Pujola by Leana Clothier

link complete interview HAM Spanish

La Contra Islandia is a project of www.escritorislandia.com by the Spanish writer Jordi Pujolà to put in contact Icelandic and Spanish cultures

HAM Icelandic Band: It looks like they have come out from a Western movie (beards, long hair, black clothes, hats…) and for sure they are the bad guys. I admit I was a bit intimidated before starting the interview (they are very famous and like black humour and irony), but we connected very well and laughed a lot, they are friendly and cool fellows

And the music is just great, especially outdoors, think of Rammstein but in Icelandic

Don´t miss:

HAM is a legendary Icelandic rock band formed in 1988, they sing in Icelandic and their songs are mostly about betrayal, grief and death, and friendship, love and hate

HAM Icelandic band started warming up the Sugarcubes´concerts and now it´s a cult band

The band participated in the making of the cult Icelandic classic film Sódóma Reykjavík and Sigurjón Kjartansson wrote most of the soundtrack

Interview HAM Iceland Ottar Proppé Secret Solstice 18
Interview HAM Iceland in Secret Solstice 18

«…the Icelandic musicians look down on the Eurovision contest…»

They stopped in 1994, and HAM did not perform again until 2001, it was a sort of bet Sigurjón made with the guys: if Rammstein visit Iceland, HAM reunite

What is the most striking of the band for me is the contrast (Iceland is full of contrasts) of the two singers: Sigurjón (glacier) is big, wears on black and has a deep voice; on the other hand,  Óttar (volcano) is light, wears 80´s flashy clothes and has an acute voice

«…I don’t think the average Iceland does have a very good taste of music…»

First thing I did when meeting them was to give them original Spanish ham I brought from Spain and told them it´s much better than Parma ham (and also advised them to drink Cava instead of Prosecco)

Meaning of HAM in Old Norse

However, Flosi Þorgeirsson told me the name of the band refers to he word «hamur». Basically, it means «skin» but the way we use it, it’s related to an expression that has shamanic references to wearing the skin of an animal, typically wolf or bear, and gaining the strength of that beast. Vera í ham

Members Icelandic band HAM

  • Sigurjón Kjartansson (guitar, vocals)
  • Óttarr Proppé (vocals)
  • Arnar Geir Ómarsson (drummer)
  • S. Björn Blöndal (bass)
  • Flosi Þorgeirsson (guitar)

The famous composer Jóhann Gunnar Jóhannsson (1969-2018) used to perform with them

«Davíð Oddsson  was actually a decent writer, he was a comedian as well, pretty decent comedian (laughs)»

Iceland in Eurovision

Icelanders are very competitive and get good results on international competitions, one example is the National Football team. However, despite their high expectations and interest in Eurovision contest (when the show starts, even the local competition, you see deserted streets in Reykjavik and not for volcanoes or earthquakes), the results always bring a lot of frustration and disappointment. Why a country of so fine musicians always fails on it?

S: I think the Eurovision people have fallen intro a trap. The people who go to the songs and to the competition are little close to club, because the other people, the musicians, they look down on the Eurovision contest

Interview Ham Iceland performing stage Secret Solstice
Interview Ham Iceland outstanding live outdoors

B: It´s also the boring. We vote for the same paths, usually the second place is more interesting than the first one…

S: And then we come into the common kind of taste of the nation. I don’t think the average Iceland does have a very good taste on music (laughs)

B: It could be because it´s a compromise… the compromises are not the best way to choose a song

S: We have a strong niche scene (Sigur Rós…), but that is really not something people in Gardabær (posh neighbourhood in Reykjavik) are listening to, you know. But the people in Gardabær is the people who vote for the best song in Eurovision, that´s the middle of the road music (MOR)

Interview HAM, comparison with Rob Ford

B: It´s a bit like Rob Ford, former major of Toronto, not a very likeable person, nobody in Toronto voted for him, but all the suburbs around voted for him, he was supposed to be the one representing Toronto but he was not their spirit basically

S: But in some other countries, like Sweden, I would say may be the niche is stronger, and there is more respect for the good musicians, you know. Here is not respect among the musicians that they take themselves seriously, so they don’t want to be part of Eurovision; mostly who write Eurovision´s songs are more people like doctors, dentists… they are good, very talented people, but they need this extra thing…DSC01970

Traditions: Þetta reddast

HAM is a very traditional Icelandic band. What do you think of the saying Þetta reddast (don´t worry too much, every thing we´ll be all right). The foreigners living in Iceland criticise Icelanders for avoiding problems just saying  Þetta réttast

S: Well, It´s a very good philosophy

B: Worrying about something never fixes the problem

Favourite places in Iceland

S: I am very much in favour of the West Fiords, I raised in Isafjorður so I go there frequently

B: I like the remote places in the East Iceland, for example Melrakkaslétta

Is this not the place were polar bears arrive from Greenland? (my eyes widened)

B: Well, it´s the land of the blue fox. There is no one there… (laughs)

Humour and irony

The components of the band are showmen, actors, politicians… How humour places into the band?

S: There is a lot of irony among us, the guys, because we know each other from so long ago; so we can say everything and those guys might understand me better than other people I met later on my life and irony and black humour place into it

Interview HAM Iceland: Inspiration

A lot of politicians in Iceland are artists as well (writers, actors, painters…). Why?

S: I don´t think so —Sigurjón frowns for the first time—, just very few politicians, just Björn Óttar, our friend, the writer Jón Gnarr (former Major of Reykjavik), Einar from the Sugar Cubes, he was in the City Committee…

B: It used to be in Iceland that everyone wanted to be a writer, a lot of people actually tried, most of them were quite bad, but some succeeded…

Interview HAM, Davíð Oddsson

And Davíð Oddsson (controversial former First Minister, mayor and director of the Bank of Iceland during the recession in Iceland)?

B: Davíð Oddsson  was actually a decent writer, he was a comedian as well, pretty decent comedian (laughs); but in general, not a lot of artists basically are going into politics, may be  increasing in the later

Katrín Jakobsdóttir should write crime novels

S: We also have to taking into account we are only 340.000 people, not many us of us, so may we have many purposes. I know, for instance, Katrín Jakobsdóttir, our First Minister, she is very interested in crime novels, it´s not a ridiculous idea, she might, in the future, take a little different turn and write crime novels

HAM interview by Jordi Pujola at Secret Solstice 18
HAM interview before concert Secret Solstice 18

B: If you choose a certain path, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you have to stay in it for the whole life, you can change directions or take detours, actually you should because we need a lot of people, we should have like 5 jobs. We have the freedom of changing opinions because how few we are

I agree, for example in Spain, we are much more conservative

Boredom or fun in the 80´s Reykjavik?

Hallgrímur Helgasson describes tedium in 101 Reykjavik novel but Sjón had a lot of fun. What about you?

B: It was quite different then, but it was a period where a lot of things were coming in, we were seeing more cultures of another nations, people were going abroad more, so the world became bigger, so I would say that the period was a melting pot, not only for the artists,  we kind of believed that everything is possible

What do you know about Spain?

S: I´ve been in Barcelona, by far my favourite place, in Almeria and the typical summer vacation spots

B: I´ve been in Catalonia, Barcelona, Camprodon… great beaches

The most Icelanders love Spanish food

S: Food in Barcelona is great, but somewhere else, in the tourists spots, it sucks. You don’t care about the tourists (laughs)

I guess it happens in all the countries

S: Not in Italy, pizza and pasta are good even in the tourist spots

Yes, I agreeDSC01958

Interview Halldor Mar musician (Halldór Már) is an interview by the Spanish writer in Iceland Jordi Pujolá, with the support of Icelandic Mountain Guides (10% discount using promo code ESCRITOR2018, press link to see all you can do in Iceland)

Don´t miss:

Halldór Már successful Icelandic musician and TV showman in Barcelona

Iceland is a remarkable country in many fields (art, sports, tourism…) taking into account its little population (only 335.000 men)

Halldór would like to promote the Icelandic on the same way, looking for Icelandic foreign speakers in some other countries

In Icelandic news RUV (link)

And Icelanders are proud of their reputation. But it´s a pity many Icelanders don´t know any thing about talented Halldór Már yet

«Still there are people in Spain who get  Iceland with Finland mixed up»

Interview Halldor Mar musician

Halldor Mar Stefánsson was born in Reykjavik, he went to Spain in 1993 to learn classical guitar with the master Alex Arnaldur Arnarson Garrobé and didn´t go back anymore because he found a girl

«I have never been so cold in Iceland as in Barcelona»

When the songwriter arrived in Spain, he didn´t speak any Spanish or Catalan, but he learnt it by reading, watching TV and listening to the radio (Toni Soler, Buenafuente, Albert Pla…). Now he speaks both almost as a local. Icelanders have a difficult language and they are good at learning some new ones

Interview Halldor Mar Katalonski

Second of May 2018

The fame has not changed him too, he is a nice guy and a great musician wherever he plays either in an Irish pub or on the Stage of Barcelona La Mercè concerts

¿What do Spaniards or Catalans usually ask you about Iceland?

He is tall, slim, wears jeans and chequered shirts and laughs all the time, probably because his Icelandic good vibes (the ones he reveals on his book). He plays guitar and sings alternative folk pop rock

«The first album of Sigur Rós changed my way of understanding music»

I met Halldór Már in La Mercé 2017, local party of Barcelona, the city´s guest was Reykjavik and he performed 3 concerts, he did it very well and is going to play again in 2018; afterwards I visited his new music school (cooperative of musicians) in Sant Gervasi, a nice place with good atmosphere (Ars Viva, Via Agusta 108). He also came to visit me in Reykjavik, his father lives in Fossvogur as well

Interview Halldor Mar musician in Barcelona

Halldor Mar in love with Barcelona

  • ¿Why do you like so much Barcelona?

It´s very well located, you have the sea, the mountains… The weather is good and it´s a cultural city, this is important

  • ¿Do you think you will come back to Iceland?

Well, why not? but I think my Spanish wife won´t be as please as me, she likes living in a big city, moving around by public transportation, you know. At the moment, going on vacations it´s enough

  • ¿What do you miss from Iceland?

I miss the family, friends, the food (I love hangikjöt!), the midnight sun in summer and northern lights in winter

An uncommon master on classical guitar

It´s not usual to a classical guitar master to perform in Irish pubs or private parties; however, Halldór Már did it and because of his bravery a cool hunter saw him when he was singing the habanera La bella Lola in English and asked him to sing on the famous TV advertisement of Cerveza Damm with the former Barça football player Cesc Fábregas. So he first recorded the album Winds and later on Records, Catalan anthems in Catalan and English

Interview Halldor Mar musician by Jordi Pujola
Interview Halldor Mar musician in Reykjavik

«I only put one song of each Catalan author, 11 in total; it was hard to choice them because the wide range of Catalan songs»

A project Catalonia Iceland

Halldor Mar´s project is to show the world Catalan songs. The aim of this blog www.escritorislandia.com is to put in contact Spanish Catalan and Icelandic culture. He is an Icelandic man in Catalonia and I am a Catalan man in Iceland. Besides that, he was the guitarist in my wedding (2008) in the City Hall of Barcelona Consell de Cent (Pça. Sant Jaume)

The book of Halldor Mar

We have many things in common, he actually wrote a book as well (The world according Halldór, Bridge). I strongly recommend it. It´s a sort of biography and self help book where he explains his philosophy of life:

  • Don´t go against the stream
  • Open minding
  • Look for the other´s comfort
Entrevista Halldor Mar el mosn segons Halldór
Entrevista Halldor Mar el mundo según islandés

Halldor Mar the artist

Halldor Mar is a storyteller from the Sagas (look at his long hear, his beard, his reddish colour…). I love the song of his TV show:

«There are not strangers, only friends you haven´t met yet»

Katalonski Halldor Mar the success of a TV show

And now Halldor Mar is presenting Katalonski (it means Catalan in Polish)a show on TV3 (the national Catalan TV channel) with a lot of audience

Halldor Mar travels with his guitar looking for people who learnt the Catalan in other countries (most of them have never been in Catalonia) and this fact changed their lives. Many times Halldór sings their favourite songs with them at the end of the show

The idea is great. Halldór would like to promote the Icelandic on the same way, looking for  Icelandic foreign speakers in some other countries

  • ¿How do you like being famous in Barcelona?

«It´s just good. Not problem at all. Sometimes it´s a bit strange when people who I don´t know call me by my name; but in general, Catalans, like Icelanders, respect for privacy». «Besides that, it´s a blessing to get a decent salary from music. Musicians usually don´t earn much money and have to work many hours from bar to bar»

Topics about Iceland

  • ¿What do Spaniards or Catalans usually ask you about Iceland?

«They say: I went to Iceland last year or I´m going next month; some say Finland instead of Iceland. Or they say: So cold! and then I reply: it´s cool, not cold. But I have never feel so cold in Iceland as in Barcelona, it´s because the humidity, you know. Besides that, in Iceland houses are warm and you stare at the snow from the window»

Secret Solstice Iceland

Secret Solstice invited me with my photographer Leana Clothier to write an article about the music festival and I asked Halldór Már for advice

secret-solstice-jordi-pujola

He recommends:

Jet Black Joe, Högni (he doesn´t know anything about him but admits they are almost identical), Stuðmenn, Agent Fresco, Gus Gus, Ham…

Sigur Rós

Sigur Rós was not playing, however he said they changed his concept of music with the first album (the voice is on the same level as the instruments, shoe gazers style)

I love Sigur Rós as well. I saw them in Razzmatazz Barcelona in 2003 when they were not famous yet, I almost touched them with my hand

On the 26th September Halldór Már plays guitar and sings in Casino de Barcelona. Don´t miss it

The naughty alter ego of Blaz Roca

Many Icelanders remember Blaz Roca as the rude guy who interviewed famous people on his popular TV show  Íslensk Kjötsupa

But that was not me, it was Johnny Naz, a sarcastic character I made up to ask stupid shitty questions at people

Blaz Roca (Erpur Eyvindarson 29th August 1977 Kópavogur) is the father of rap in Iceland, he started rapping with his older brother Sesar A and was the leader of the most famous rap band: XXX Rottweiler Hundar. His voice is just cool, he is very talented and has won many awards, for example Gold disc with the classic Kópacabana (Kópavogur + Copacabana). He lived in Cuba, smokes cigars, drinks rum and speaks Spanish

Interview rapper Blaz Roca

  • You are one of the fathers of the rap in Iceland, how has the rap changed since you started?

The rap has changed on the non stop, plastically, through the years. It´s a young culture so we are still trying to get more control of how to use the voice and the flow, so lots of the changes have been technical, for example, the flow back in the 80´s (when my brother and I started) was much slower

Interview JóiPé x Króli

In the 90´s, the rap became faster (twista rap), more conscious, intelligent, it also changed  the topics, with more vocabulary, using lots of words and rhyme plays, so you had to be very technical, otherwise no one listened to you, you were dead or out of the window

Interview rapper Blaz Roca Secret Solstice Iceland rap
Interview rapper Blaz Roca big stage Secret Solstice

In the 2000- 2005 rap changes again and everybody is doubling themself down, everybody is sounding much more simple both the flows and the topics of the songs, the lyrics are copies of some other copies (the dataism on the field of arts), but on purpose

Interview Úlfur Úlfur

As an artist (he is also a painter (graphics, comics), sculptor, has a degree in animation…) I easily see the resembles of hip hop as an art form and the art in general. There are always cycles, ups and downs, and If something is too technical, it inevitably drops down. It´s tiring to see always the same

Interview rapper Blaz Roca

  • What do you think about the new generations?

In my opinion, nowadays the mainstream of the rap is naif, simple, childish… mumble rap; you see the examples on Lil Pump or Rich Chigga.

However, I am not criticizing them, this rap is just something else, art is open and new fresh ideas are always welcome. Live and leave live

  • Have you ever played in Secret Solstice? How was your experience? What makes different this festival different from some others?

I´have been playing every Secret Solstice since the beginning on the big stage,  It´s my favourite, I strongly recommend it

There are four main music festivals in Iceland:

  1. In the beginning of August many people go outside Reykjavik to the countryside for outdoor music festivals, I wouldn´t use exactly the word music festivals, just let´s get drunk festivals  and have some bands as well (playing twining anthems). This is a historical thing, classical tradition in Iceland,
  2. Sónar in February, but the program is mostly clubbing, little room for some other kind of artists
  3. Iceland Airwaves in November, really artistic, new and different bands, indie… but then, there are many bands I don´t necessarily connect with; and curtly  somebody starts playing like a float, doing some nerdy hipster things
  4. Secret Solstice Iceland has all the good qualities: outdoors, get drunk, clubbing, artistic, wide range of bands… It´s just the best
Interview rapper Blaz Roca with brother Sesar A
Interview rapper Blaz Roca with Sesar A
  • What are your favorite artists in Iceland?

There are many really good artists in Iceland:

  1. GKR. Do you now the song  Allt í lagi?
  2. Jóipé x Króli. Do you know the famous song BOBA?

Of course, Sir, I said. Both perform in Secret Solstice 2018. Don´t miss them!

And also Valby bros/33Mob (not really artistic but the representatives of the suburbs of Iceland, working class dudes)

And what about Emmsjé Gautier?

I helped him a lot when he started and we played together a song  on my disc Kópacabana. Now he´s established, he´s up there with the big boys. But I´m always searching for something really new, I´m trying to name you someone you don’t know as Blaffi Blackout, Krish…

  • Who is for you the best rapper in the world?

That is a very difficult question, how do we judge them?

Because the technical? good artist? entertainer? original? I can tell you the names of the ones who had more influence on me

Best rappers

  1. Rakim , he changed the rap, he is the father of the modern flowing: he is conscious, political, technical… amazing
  2. KOS1
  3. Paris
  4. Public Enemy (back when I was a teenager)
  5. Childish Gambino
  6. The Britt scene (London, Birmingham), for example JayKae

Those rappers on my opinion combine all these qualities

And what about Eminem?

Eminem is technically very good, and also conscious; however I prefer some others. But when you reach this top level, the rest is personal choice. He´s an extraordinary rapper and has influenced me a lot, but now is sober, he is doing AA, and often when people stop drinking and having drugs they have to rethink how they make music again, he´s still finding his way

Why won´t  you be in Secret Solstice this year?

Because I will do, as every Icelander should be doing, going to Russia to support our National Football Team. Otherwise I would be for sure in Secret Solstice Iceland 2018

  • Have you ever been to Spain? How did you like it?

I have been in Catalonia (Barcelona), Madrid, driving around Andalucia, the islands, Benidorm (playing in a bar club of tourists)…

I really like the food, specially Ibérico ham, and I love the culture of eating, drinking and talking for many hours; in the north, we tend to eat quickly and start automatically doing something else and drinking only for special occasions to get drunk

  • What about the Spanish culture?

I love the mix of cultures, from the gypsies, Arabs…, you can easily see it in Andalucia. I like the heat in the culture,  I like how easy is to relax in Spain

My favourite artists are from Cuba, Central America, Manuchao… I really like Spanish language in rap
